Bridge #29 Damage

Flood damage photos of bridge #29.  Date unknown.  This bridge was removed after the '48 flood and made much smaller on the other side of the creek when the railroad changed the alignment at this area.  Quality of photos is not the best.

Not sure of this location, but it appears soil has washed over the tracks.

Repair Work

Men work on restoring the bank of the railroad bed a few hundred yards north of bridge #30.  The track is on the upper right and they are working down in the creek bed.  This work took place becuase of major flooding that crippled the area and scoured this bank and many others.  You can see in this picture rock filled gabion baskets were installed to prevent the undermining of the railroad bed on this curved section.  Looking on the up grade.   Picture taken on May 23, 1938.

Repairing damage caused by a big flood in 1938.  Here in this picture, construction crews are revising the alignment of the track and moving it away from the wash-out.  Looking south.  This is at mile post 33 about half way between Alstown and Douglas next to the Daling Ranch.

A bladeless dozer hard at work with a pull-scrapper grading the new alignment.  Looking north with the Daling Ranch in the background.  Skykomish Historical Society provided photos.

Bridge #28

GNRY officials inspect the damaged remains of bridge #28 during the summer of 1948.  Looking on the down grade.  Picture provided by the Skykomish Historical Society.

June 2012 photo showing approximate location of bridge #28.  The bridge crossed the creek just out of view if this picture to the right.  You can see where the line used to run prior to the 1948 flood on the right.   GN relocated the line to the left and eliminated this bridge completely.  I'm standing on the revised grade location looking on the up grade approximately where the basalt rock face is in the above photo.
